Enphase Energy, based in Fremont and known for its solar technology and EV chargers, is laying off about 500 people. This is the latest in a string of bad news for the Bay Area’s solar and battery industries, which have lost a lot of jobs and even shut down completely in 2024.
Enphase recently told the SEC that the layoffs will affect 17% of its global staff, which includes contractors. This news comes after the company cut 10% of its staff less than a year ago, blaming problems with regulations and a drop in demand for solar panels because of high interest rates.
CEO Badri Kothandaraman told workers in a memo that the layoffs are needed to “handle the continued economic challenges in the solar industry.”
