‘The secret life of caregivers’ is kept hidden.

Millions of family members and friends in California alone give care without getting paid. They make important and generous contributions.

AARP says that the work of the 48 million family caregivers across the country is worth an amazing $600 billion and is quietly changing the way healthcare is provided.

For this system to work, it takes more than just coffee and tissues.  It also takes nurses who are always there for their patients, showing that love has no limits—or budget.

The Everyday Heroes

Most people who care for others are family members, like spouses, adult children, and relatives. Many of these selfless people care for others for an average of more than 20 hours a week, often giving up their own jobs to do it. They are the ones taking care of all the duties. It’s hard for every parent in their own way.

A Day in the Life

Imagine getting up very early with a lot of things to do in your mind. As part of the morning routine, you might help your loved one get dressed, make meals, give them medicine, bathe them, schedule their meetings, and be their emotional support.

Caregivers often laugh as they try to make sense of the chaos in their loved ones’ lives. It’s a hard job that brings both happiness and sadness.

Stories from the Heart

Caregivers have stories that are just as different from the people they take care of. Some people talk about taking care of a loved one with a long-term illness and finding humor and grace in the middle of the pain.

Others talk about the hard and rewarding parts of taking care of old parents and how love and patience can turn even the worst days into memories that will last a lifetime.

Caregiving for Children: A Special Kind of Love

A lot of attention is paid to adults who care for children, but let’s not forget about the amazing young people who do the same. Most of the time, these child caregivers love and support siblings, friends, or small children, even those who have disabilities or long-term illnesses.

Trying to meet their own needs while navigating the complexities of a child’s development can feel like juggling flaming torches. It’s an amazing feat that takes a lot of skill and heart.

A Personal Reflection

It’s hard for me not to feel both thankful and worried as I think about my own trip. My parents died before they needed care. My dad died in a terrible accident while I was on my vacation, and my mom died of pancreatic cancer.

I am 73 years old, and both of my kids are in their 30s. As I get older, I can’t help but wonder if they’ll be in charge of my care one day. This thought makes me feel very bad, and I don’t want to put any extra stress on them.

Caregiver Survival Stories

In fact, caring for someone can be hard on both your mind and body. So, it’s very important for guardians to put themselves first.

From yoga sessions to dance parties in the kitchen, these survival stories are full of ways to deal with stress that tell us it’s okay to take a break. Even superheroes need time to recharge.

Resources

Live Oak Adult Day Care in Los Gatos gives caregivers a break and gives them knowledge and help. The Family Action Network is a non-profit group that helps caregivers by giving them knowledge and speaking out for them. These are just two of the many tools that parents can use.

Celebrating Caregiver Appreciation

A lot of the time, guardians feel ignored and undervalued. Their work is very important, and we should honor and thank them for it. A sincere thank-you note, a surprise coffee run, or even a well-earned day off can make them feel better and let them know they’re not going through this trip alone.

As we celebrate Family Caregiver Month, let’s take a moment to honor these amazing people. By letting more people know about the good and bad things about caring for others, we can create a community of support that gives caregivers the tools and help they need.

Happy birthday to all the unsung heroes out there! Your love, patience, and strength are what keep our families and towns together.
