A man from Orlando who has been convicted of a felony before is now facing four years in jail for having a gun without a permit. A message from the U.S.
The Middle District of Florida’s attorney’s office said that Xavier Hernandez-Gerena, 35, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Paul G. Byron after pleading guilty to the charges on August 1.
The reason he was found guilty was because he was pulled over for a driving violation on July 5, 2022. During the stop, cops smelled marijuana, which caused them to search his car.
A gun was found in an open small black bag next to Hernandez-Gerena’s lap during the check. Since he had been guilty of a crime, he was arrested for having a gun without a permit.
This case was part of a bigger effort called Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). The goal of PSN is to get neighborhood groups and the police to work together to lower violent crime and gun violence. The U.S.
In order to relaunch PSN, the Department of Justice worked on building trust and legitimacy in communities, helping groups that work to stop violence, setting smart enforcement goals, and measuring the results correctly.
As the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives looked into things, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office helped them. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. McNeff was in charge of the case.
