People in Santa Clara County who care about public service can apply to serve on the 2025–26 Civil Grand Jury. The Civil Grand Jury is a part of the judicial body whose job it is to make sure that local government is open and accountable.
A press release from the Santa Clara County Superior Court says that the civil grand jury is an independent group that meets once a year and is the county’s civil watchdog.
It can look into all parts of county and city government, as well as special districts and school districts. The grand jury is told by the court to look closely at books, records, and financial spending to make sure that public funds are being used properly.
The civil grand jury is also in charge of checking out the conditions of jails and sites for young offenders.
Judge Beth McGowen of the Superior Court talks about how important it is to serve on the civil grand jury.
“Being a civil grand juror is a great way for people to fully do their civic duty.” McGowen said, “It gives people a lot of power by giving them a deep understanding of how local government works and a great way to push for positive change.
” “By participating in this process, jurors offer useful ideas and suggestions that help make the government more open and accountable, and ultimately make our community better.”
The report says that people who want to apply must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and live in Santa Clara County.
For one fiscal year, people who are chosen to serve on a civil grand jury must commit to a minimum of 25 hours of work each week.
The civil grand jury for 2025–26 will meet for the first time on July 1, 2025, and end on June 30, 2026.
