It was decided that Maurice Hastings stole something and broke into a house with a dangerous weapon.
Apparently, the 67-year-old man was found guilty by a jury while on parole after committing the crimes in the same apartment twice and being caught by the San Mateo Police the second time.
This was reported on social media by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
The San Mateo Daily Journal said that on March 25, Hastings stole a $450 mountain bike from the back patio of an apartment in the Darcy building.
He had earlier followed a tenant through the security gate. At 3:38 a.m. on May 24, Hastings broke into the flat again by climbing through a window. He then went up to the sleeping victim, held a knife to his chest, and turned on the light.
Hastings was caught near the apartment complex with a folded knife in his pocket. He had threatened the victim with the knife before leaving the scene of the crime.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe called it a “third strike” case to emphasize how bad Hastings’ acts were while he was out on bail for another felony.
As a result of being out on bail when Hastings committed two counts of felony burglary and an enhancement for doing these crimes, he faced a harsh possible punishment of 50 years to life in prison. His trial was scheduled for October 27.
