The Newark Police Department has been awarded a $70K grant to improve road safety programs.

The California Office of Traffic Safety gave the Newark Police Department a $70,000 grant to improve its teaching and enforcement programs that aim to lower the number of injuries and deaths on the roads.

Traffic Sergeant Karl Fredstrom said, “This money will make us even more dedicated to keeping people safe in our community.” “We will be able to increase our efforts in making our roads safer for everyone and focus on critical areas such as distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding.

The grant will help fund a number of different projects, such as DUI checkpoints, patrols that target drunk drivers, and high-profile operations to stop drivers from being distracted, especially those who break California’s hands-free cell phone rule.

Enforcement will also focus on unsafe driving habits that put pedestrians and cyclists at risk, like speeding, failing to yield, and making turns or lane changes without looking first.

Part of the grant’s goals are to give talks about traffic safety problems in the community, work together with nearby police departments to enforce the law, and train police officers in the Standard Field Sobriety Test, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Drug Recognition Expert programs.

The California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will pay for the program, which will run until September 2025.
