Some middle and high school kids in Dixie County will have to hide their phones during school hours.
It was reported that students at Dixie County Middle High School will no longer be able to use cell phones while they are at school.
In their message, they ask parents to remember their kids to turn off their phones and put them in their lockers or bags during the school day.
A lot of people think this is a good idea that can help stop bullying, which has caused some debate. Some people say they can’t support the change because there could be a medical emergency or a school shooting.
People who have kids say that social media is bad for their mental health and that they shouldn’t use it at school.
A parent named Denelle Cook said, “I’ve dealt with some stuff with my child and bullying on social media, and I know the school can’t control that. So it helps that they’re not a school recording fights, making threats, and all that.”
One mom doesn’t agree and says she wants them to have phones in case of an emergency.
“Recently, my eighth-grader son got a serious head injury and was bleeding. Another mom, Bobbi Jo Lytte Burke, said, “My son had time to call four times, but I still hadn’t heard from the school.”
One former student says that her brothers are still going there, so she is worried but also sees things from the point of view of a student.
“I know I used my phone a lot when I was a student.” An ex-student named Maddie Missildine said, “Going to school is important because you want to learn and get an education.” “On the other hand, students should always be able to get their phones ready in case of an emergency, like a medical one.”
In a statement, Superintendent Mike Thomas says, “Cell phones have become a distraction and get in the way of our efforts to give our students good instruction.”
The kids have been told not to use their phones at school. For educational reasons, like logging in for classes that count toward two degrees, it will be possible. People will be able to use cell phones on campus before and after school.
Parental units can call the front desk and leave a word for their children in case of an emergency.
